Celebrating America250 With Scouting America: Service, Citizenship, and Community

Jun 1, 2026

As we approach the 250th birthday of America, communities across the country are gearing up for a once-in-a-generation Fourth of July celebration known as America250. This milestone is a chance to reflect on where the nation has been, where it’s going, and how everyday Americans can be part of that journey.

For Scouts and supporters of Scouting America, this historic Independence Day is an opportunity to lead through service, strengthen communities, and bring the spirit of citizenship to life in meaningful, hands-on ways.

What Is America250?

July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s founding ideals while looking ahead to its future, bringing Yankees of all stripes together to celebrate America and serve in meaningful ways. The official U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, America250, encourages the public to commemorate this momentous anniversary and promote American ideals of freedom, democracy, and opportunity on an international stage.

The initiative is designed to be inclusive, nationwide, and forward-looking. America250 programming will highlight the country’s history, culture, and shared values while encouraging civic engagement and community participation across all 50 states and US territories. It invites individuals, organizations, and communities to take part in service projects, educational initiatives, and celebrations that honor the nation’s past while strengthening its future.

The Role of Scouting America in America250

Scouting America is playing a major role in the America250 celebration, partnering with the commission to inspire the next generation of civic leaders. This collaboration emphasizes service, leadership development, and civic responsibility as central themes of the semiquincentennial.

National Initiatives and Programs

One of the most prominent opportunities for Scouts is the Liberty in Action: America250 Challenge. This initiative encourages kids and teens to engage in Scouting activities that promote patriotism, community service, and historical understanding. Participants can complete challenges related to citizenship, volunteerism, and learning about American history, reinforcing the values at the heart of both Scouting and the nation’s founding.

Younger Scouts can complete activities to earn the Liberty in Action patch, an official America250 emblem. Qualifying steps include crafts, storytelling, and simple service projects that introduce foundational civic concepts in an accessible and engaging way.

Scouting America’s official America250 page outlines other ways Scouts can participate in service projects, educational programs, and community events tied to the anniversary. These efforts are designed to help young people actively contribute to their communities while deepening their understanding of civic responsibility.

Community Service and Civic Engagement

Service is a cornerstone of both Scouting programs and America250. Scouts are encouraged to:

  • Organize or participate in local service projects such as park cleanups, food drives, and community improvement efforts
  • Volunteer at America250-related events in their communities
  • Support veterans, first responders, and civic organizations through acts of service

These activities align with the broader America250 mission to unite Americans through service and shared purpose.

Patriotic Celebrations and Activities

Local councils and Scouting organizations are also promoting patriotic activities that bring communities together. The Laurel Highlands Council suggests Independence Day–themed activities such as flag ceremonies, historical reenactments, and educational programs that teach Scouts about the nation’s founding.

The National Flag Foundation Light to Unite initiative offers another meaningful way to participate. Scouts and their families can display lights in patriotic colors as a symbol of unity and national pride, helping communities visually celebrate the milestone.

The Laurel Highlands Council has also been selected to lead a special Flags United ceremony at Flag Plaza Scout Center on July 3 as part of the lead-up to America250. The event will bring together two major patriotic initiatives: Pennsylvania’s statewide Flags Across Pennsylvania program and the National Flag Foundation’s Flag Sojourn.

After helping carry three American flags and a Scouting America flag through 12 counties in western Pennsylvania as part of the larger 67-county Flags Across Pennsylvania effort, Laurel Highlands Council Scouts will help welcome the flags to Flag Plaza Scout Center for a ceremony celebrating service, citizenship, and civic engagement. The event will serve as a symbolic bridge between local communities, statewide participation, and the national observance of America’s 250th anniversary.

Building Future Civic Leaders

At its core, Scouting America’s involvement in America250 is about preparing young people to lead. By participating in service, learning about history, and engaging with their communities, Scouts develop the skills and values needed to become active, informed citizens.

This focus on leadership and civic engagement ensures that America250 is not just a celebration of the past, but a meaningful investment in the future.

How Communities Can Support Local Scouting and America250

America250 is a nationwide effort, but its success depends on strong local participation. Community members, alumni, and supporters can play a vital role by supporting their local Scouting councils and programs.

The Laurel Highlands Council offers multiple ways to get involved. Contributions help to maintain programs that provide leadership development, outdoor education, and service opportunities for youth.

Supporting local Scouting efforts can include:

  • Making financial contributions to sustain programs and expand access
  • Volunteering as a mentor, leader, or event supporter
  • Encouraging young people to join Scouting programs and participate in America250 activities

By investing in Scouting at the local level, communities help ensure that young people can take part in meaningful America250 experiences. These efforts not only honor the nation’s 250th anniversary but also strengthen the next generation of leaders who will shape its future.
