Dec 14, 2023

PITTSBURGH, PA — December 14, 2023 — On Saturday, December 16th, 2023, the Scoutreach Program proudly celebrates its largest class of Eagle Scouts to date. Five outstanding young men from the West End neighborhood have achieved Scouting’s highest rank, marking a significant milestone for the program and the community. The accomplishments of Kamren Mitchell, Kyrique Mitchell, Eric Englert, Rafael Diaz, and Donald Reid III will be celebrated at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

Scoutreach is a unique and inclusive initiative that extends the benefits of Scouting to underserved communities, fostering personal growth, leadership development, and community engagement. The program strives to make Scouting accessible to all youth, regardless of socio-economic background, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the transformative journey of Scouting.

Kamren Mitchell, a member of Eagle Scout Troop 710 Sheraden, led a remarkable service project to restore the auxiliary room of the West End Salvation Army Corps. Despite facing unexpected challenges, Kamren demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, guiding fellow Scouts and adults through the project. A graphic design and art enthusiast, Kamren is now a college freshman at Penn West Edinboro, focusing on graphic design and aspiring to become an Anime design and sketch artist.

Kyrique Mitchell, also a member of Eagle Scout Troop 710 Sheraden, took on the challenge of restoring and remodeling the handicap-accessible entrance to “Da Village” Social Hall and Event Center. His dedication to giving back to the organization that supported the Troop during challenging times showcases his commitment to community service. Kyrique, a senior at Pittsburgh Taylor Alderdice High School, is focusing on business and aspiring to become an entrepreneur.

Eric Englert, an Eagle Scout from Troop 147 Crafton, showcased his environmental stewardship by leading a project to create bat boxes for the Chartiers Creek Trail. His meticulous planning and coordination ensured the success of the project, providing a safe living environment for local bats. Eric, a senior at Pittsburgh Brashear, is concentrating on automotive maintenance with aspirations for a future career in autobody repair.

Rafael Diaz, a member of Eagle Scout Troop 710 Sheraden, earned the rank of Eagle by restoring the memorial Garden of American Legion Post 496 Langley in Sheraden. Rafael, the Troop’s first Latino-American Eagle Scout, demonstrated exceptional leadership and

resilience, even overcoming a medical emergency during the project. Rafael is a senior at Pittsburgh Brashear High School, aspiring to become a color commentator for the WWE or a major sports network.

Donald Reid III, known as DJ, completed his Eagle Scout journey with a community mural project in collaboration with Pittsburgh River life. Despite unforeseen challenges, DJ demonstrated adaptability and leadership, leaving a lasting impact on the community. Now studying graphic design with a concentration in animation at Penn West Edinboro on a full scholarship, DJ continues to showcase his artistic talents.

The Scoutreach Program and the Laurel Highlands Council is immensely proud of these five young men who have not only achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout but have also demonstrated exceptional leadership, community service, and resilience. Their journeys from hesitant scouts to community leaders are a testament to the transformative power of the Scoutreach program.

The Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 16th, 2023, at Trinity AME Zion Church, 3105 Allendale Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15204. The event is open to the public, and all are invited to celebrate the achievements of these remarkable Eagle Scouts.
